Somatic sex determination of an adult by bone remains (review)

Summary:

The article presents a comprehensive osteoscopic approach based on the visual identification of high- quality semi-diagnostic signs on the bones. The differences in the bones of the skeleton in this approach are determined by the greater development of the muscles in men as compared with women, as well as the performance of a fertility function by the woman. On the pelvic bones, differences are functional in nature: the structure of the male pelvis is determined only by supporting and motor functions, and the structure of the female pelvis must also ensure the function of delivery. An osteometric approach is described to determine the somatic sex from the pelvic bones of a person, the basis of which is the use of the instrumental method of determining the properties of objects, fixed in numerical values. It has been shown that almost all bones of the skeleton have the signs of sexual dimorphism, however, they are most clearly expressed in the bones of the pelvis and skull. Determining the gender of bone remains requires a complete examination of the bones presented. It depends on the number of objects, their state, the completeness of the methods used, as well as on the preparation of the expert. A careful analysis of the greatest number of signs revealed on the bones will allow us to arrive at the most reliable result, which is important when establishing the identity of an unidentified corpse.

Experimental study of synthetic polymeric materials as a basis in the creation of the advaced carrier matrix for the cultivation of limbal stem cells

Summary:

Purpose: to study in the experiment the properties of three diferent types of synthetic polyester matrices, to conduct their comparative assessment and determine the optimum as a carrier for the cultivation and transplantation of limbal stem cells while eliminating limbal insufciency. Material and Methods. Transparency, mechanical properties (strength, elongation at break, modulus of rigidity), biocompatibility with cell cultures of the cornea, as well as the study of the timing of matrix biodegradation in vivo were carried out. Results. The study examined the optical and mechanical properties of matrices made from polylactide-glycolide (PLG), polylactide-caprolactone (PLC) and poly-e-caprolactone (PCL). It was experimentally shown that human and rabbit limbal stem cells, as well as human corneal epithelium cells, adhered on the surface of all types of matrices under investigation, and during cultivation they retained the typical structure of actin cytoskeleton, the ability to proliferate and migrate. Diferences in the interaction of diferent cell cultures with diferent types of carriers were revealed. The terms of biodegradation of PLC matrices with a thickness of 5 μm was about 30 days. Conclusion. The results indicate that it is possible to use 5 μm thick PLC matrices as a carrier of cultured limbal stem cells.

Clinical, psychophysiological and psychological aspects of risk factors of periodontal disease development in clinically healthy persons

Summary:

The research goal is to determine risk factors of periodontal disease development, psychophysiological personal types and their interrelations in clinically healthy persons. 47 first-year cadets of St.-Petersburg Military School of radio electronics have been examined. This group of respondents has been chosen by presence of such social stressor as change of place of living (97,9% cadets have arrived in St.-Petersburg from other cities and republics of the Russian Federation) and strict disciplinary conditions. The research has revealed a low level of oral hygiene, cases of mild gingivitis in most respondents. The general mental state of group under study is characterized by raised level of personal anxiety and low indices of reactive anxiety. The examined group has demonstrated anxiety, tension, indecision and lowered stress stability. Clinically healthy persons are more liable to develop inflammatory and inflammatory-destructive periodontal diseases. It was possible to determine psychophysiological features correlated with physiological parameters of risk degree of periodontal diseases. It may have a great significance in defining of periodontal disease etiology and pathogenesis
